August 30/Labor Day Weekend/The Unofficial End of Summer? Already?? Wow. I’m both glad and incredulous that it’s here. As always, time is flying and it’s hard to believe that August is over. But the end of August means cooler temperatures are so close!!! FALL is coming and so is football, baseball playoffs, fire pits, rain (hopefully), sweatshirts, fall decorations, Halloween, cooler running weather, pumpkins and apple harvests. Apples and pumpkins being in season means apple pie, apple brown betty, apple crisp, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pie….get the picture? YUM. Oh how I love this time of year!
Right or wrong fall arriving also means that it’s time to start thinking about Christmas and birthday presents. I have a big family and 3 of my children and 2 of my grandchildren have fall birthdays. So I’m already on the hunt for good deals and when I see something I snap it up. I came across these rain boots on sale recently.
A good start and they are going to make great (Christmas or birthday) presents.
I love it when my kids make me laugh. The other day Patrick was telling me how he had found a new show to watch on Netflix. But he was unimpressed with the lack of imagination from the writers naming the episodes. Apparently, three different shows all used the same title for their very first episode. The writers called them…….. Pilot. Laughing I told him that is often the title given to the very first show of a new series. He looked at me in surprise and said, “Well that makes a whole lot more sense. ”
Okay. I think it was funnier in the moment. But if you know Patrick and can picture his face maybe you’ll find it funny too.
School and all the accompanying activities have kicked into high gear. This week required at least one night of The Hubby and me dividing and conquering to handle what needed to done. Ronald aka The Hubby, handled the football scrimmage while I headed to the school for curriculum night. Now, I know I have two boys and I know I have two boys in middle school. I swear I do. But apparently I just don’t want to believe it. Sitting in Patrick’s first period class and listening to the teacher suddenly I realized I never got Ben’s schedule so I could do the 6th grade visits too. Facepalm.
Luckily, their school is small and they have all the same core teachers so I was able to get the 6th grade paperwork after they were done with their 8th grade presentations.
Don’t tell Ben I forgot.
I finally got new running shoes. This was way overdue. When I started running I didn’t want to drop big bucks on a good pair of running shoes until I knew whether I would stick with it so I used what I had. Which were also good and suited perfectly to get me going. But, as the miles added up on that pair of shoes I should have replaced them sooner. When I showed them to the sales rep he said I definitely needed a new pair. Oh well. I have them now and if the theory Ben subscribes to is true then I should be able to run faster and jump higher. I’ll let you know if that holds true.
I went to an early kickboxing class this morning. We worked really really hard. At the end of class the instructor must have thought we are tougher than we look. Holy cow. He pushed us relentlessly……push-ups, toe touches with medicine balls, Russian twists with the same medicine balls, then jumping rope.
Time-wise I don’t know how long each exercise lasted but he went from one to the next without stopping. And I think we did each set 3 times. If I didn’t burn a 1000 calories in that ‘power-hour” then I hope I at least came pretty darn close.
“C’mon. Keep going. You can do it. Don’t stop. Keep it up.”
Such encouraging words!!
On the last jumping rope set we were dying and he began the countdown to finishing.
“Coach….(pant) If I survive this (huff) I’m going to do (puff) my Rocky IV (wheeze) imitation (gasp) with the jump rope.”
He smiled at me and said, “Go for i!”
I survived and promptly tried my totally awesome Rocky imitation. Unfortunately, I’m not nearly as cool as Sylvester Stallone.
Wap, drop one end of the rope. Dang it. Pick up dropped end. Wap. Wap.
Oh well I tried and it was good for a laugh.
Speaking of Rocky….. The Hubby was browsing around a neighbor’s yard sale and found this poster. He brought it home and hung it up in honor of my boxing/kickboxing attempts. It’s 4′x6′. That’s 4 FEET by 6 FEET. Not inches. It’s huge. But it rolls up and hangs behind a valance so it’s really a pretty fun item.
Krista, my daughter, came across a DVD we made in 2006 when we did a Disney Vacation. Watching it brought such sweet memories back. The boys, Patrick and Ben, were so little and cute and sweet. Patrick had his permanent front teeth and they look so BIG compared to his little face. We had SUCH fun on that vacation…
So many pictures and so many fun times. I could probably do a whole blog on that trip alone. Suffice it to say that I still think Disney World is the happiest place on earth and heading down Memory Lane has reinforced the idea that we need to save our money and make another family trip.
For now, I’ll just share a few pictures from our day at Magic Kingdom.
The character dinner at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom with Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and Pooh. Patrick was so unsure of the characters but Ben got up and danced with them and got autographs for both him and his brother.
When we were there Disney was celebrating Hallo-Wishes. The boys dressed up in their costumes – Darth Vader for Patrick and a Jedi Knight for Ben. During the parade we took video of Ben totally getting down with his boogying – in between bites of his food. Awesome. And Granny had so much fun I don’t think she stopped smiling the whole time we were there.
Seriously fun memories. I can’t wait to do it again.
